Why is this what’s expected? My daughter is 19 months old. Some nights she eats Oreos before dinner, some nights she eats all her vegetables. Some nights we don’t brush her teeth. Sometimes when I have to get stuff done, I let her watch tv and sometimes I let her watch tv just because she enjoys it. Sometimes we go for walks and to the zoo and to the park, sometimes we stay inside all weekend and lounge around. One day, we planned to have another close in age; today we’re enjoying giving all our love to one child. When people say we’re “behind” we say we’re right where we are supposed to be, taking our time, enjoying every moment with our little free spirited Gabby. She craves and needs our attention all the time and we give it to her. My body is not a manufacturing line programmed to birth a meticulously planned baby every 18 months. My body was made to give and receive love from my partner, to be open to new life when God wills it in our lives. Our life is not perfect, it’s not cookie cutter. It’s messy and ever changing. It’s up and it’s down daily. We start good and end up bad and start bad and end up good. We are real, we are emotional, we make mistakes, but we love wholeheartedly. We are parents, we are a family, we are an example. Our life is not mapped out for us to see or even made so that we can plan what happens. This week, the #blessedisshe Lent journal dives in to the sacrament of confession. As I sit here this morning with coffee and pen in hand, and my toddler running around the living room, the Lord still speaks to me. Recently, I’ve been to confession yet I am still dealing with the repercussions of my sins. How do I reconcile my relationships damaged by sin, how do I overcome something I have already been forgiven for? Spring is slowly making its way into our world. Even though the trees here are still bare, I’ve already hung my Spring tulip wreath on our front door. I may be a little early in doing so, but I can hardly contain my excitement for this season of Lent and the view of Easter rising on the horizon. Last year on Ash Wednesday, I was called to the church for the first time with my baby in arms and husband at my side. Ever since that mass, I’ve been slowly making my way back towards the Lord. Some days I run and somedays I turn the other way, but I always come back to him. Unlike my rush for Spring and Easter to be here, God has a special timeline for everything that requires both patience and preparation. For the past year I’ve been preparing for my sacraments and even much more so this Lent. I’ve immersed myself into daily prayer, I’ve been praying the rosary daily, I’ve been reading the words of our dear brother and sister saints, and I’ve been studying theology of the body. God knows I am ready to receive his graces through the sacraments, and I know I am beyond ready to enter into a sacramental marriage with the person I love most in this world. I want to be an example for Gabby, I want to show the world what marriage is supposed to be, I want to mirror the image of God through and in our love for each other. God has prepared me my entire life for this Lent and this Easter although I couldn’t see it because my heart was not open. My heart is open now, blooming like the flowers are about to be. My heart has been filled with so much love, community, and understanding this past year. I think it’s going to overflow when I come into the church and enter into the holy sacrament of matrimony. Winding down the weekend with a nice fire and this book. . . “She embraces marriage and family with a sense of mission. She armed herself with patience and endurance serving her husband tenderly.” Just started this and already loving everything about Saint Monica. Sometimes, it seems impossible to imitate Christ when our flesh turns to anger, jealousy, and vengeance but it’s then we can turn to the saints and see that it is possible. They’ve lived through everything we live through, and still chose to be kind, gentle, and patient over all things, never ceasing in prayer. . I can’t wait to dive into this journal. There is so much we can learn from women in the Bible. I’ve been re discovering myself as a woman ever since coming to the church. I’m learning what it truly means to be a woman of God, to be a Godly wife and mother, to treat and view my body as the gift it was designed to be.
